Sunshine global café (The positives of the Internet)

Updated: Dec 1, 2022

Who in the past would believe that you can connect to a person across the world in a second when the first computer was made? They certainly would not have been able to imagine the social media etiquette and norms that are practiced, much less the intricacies of social media from editing a picture to the horrors of accidentally liking your crush’s photo posted in 2018.

We live in a world that is consumed by social media, there is no doubt about it. There are so many people who have benefitted from this, but of course there are various negatives too. But this article / blog won’t focus on the negatives. It will only be the positive and sunny side of social media because there is always enough negative in these sorts of articles.

The most sunshiny side of social media is the serotonin we get from videos of pets. If a cute cat getting into unfortunate incidents or a dog chasing its own tail doesn’t make you smile, then you’re not human. I said what I said. A world of joy awaits you if you curate your feed so the cute pet videos are what you see.

The other benefit is for long distance relationships. Prejudiced as they might be with the high rate of break ups, social media is a new avenue for us to meet people from across the world. Maybe the cute boy you see cruising down a street in London is the love of your life.

Really, is there any doubt that the internet

has turned the whole world into a global cafe? I can just login to my laptop and join a webinar being held in Eastern Standard Time in New York. I might have to wake up super early or go to sleep super late but the pandemic has made sure that my sleep schedule will never recover so what’s one day of sacrificing sleep for a good session on film theory.

Pioneers Youth have also benefited from this global cafe. We were able to expand to India and Nepal initially and then establish Regional Working Committees in the South Asian Region because we were able to engage with our volunteers in a hybrid manner, both online and offline.

At the end of the day, curating your feed, be it on tiktok or instagram and maybe even facebook is what will give you that dose of serotonin from social media that can just as quickly bring your mood down. You have to take the algorithm by the numbers and make sure that you only see things that interest you and not your ex-best friend getting into their dream university. Welcome to the global cafe, make sure you cruise on the sunshine side and not the series of unfortunate events.
